Plants Gender Determination
Greater than 90%of perfect flowers produced by flowering plants having both male &female Reproductive organs..out of them half of monoecious plants have both male& female flowers on the same plant .The remaining are dioecious plants have Gender in flowers on different plants.
Plants developed several interesting mechanisms for sex determination of dioecious plants most studied silence latifolia ..in this species,sex determination by sex chromosomes common to that in many animals .males have XY chromosome&females have XX chromosome .both male &female reproductive organs in their respective plants initiated early but aborted early in flower development&similar mechanism reported in bryophyte marchantia.
Papaya plant produce male ,female &hermaphrodites based on genotype of single sex determing locus.this locus thought to be clustered with several genes play an imp role in determination of sex.
